This was the very first book I ever bought for my kid. I bought it in the final stretch of my pregnancy. I got a sneak peak before my kid arrived. I thought it was a cute little exchange between a mom and her child, but did not think much of it. It was only when I had my 4 month old infant propped up in my lap and I read the book to him did I truly appreciate the message of this book.
Pookie is sad and his mom is trying to figure out why. Pookie is not helping. Pookieโs mom starts out guessing plausible scenarios such as, โAre you sick?โ,โAre you cold?โ, etc. When all she gets are futile retorts(Noโs and Nopeโs), she switches up to ridiculous and implausible scenarios, โDid a very large hippo try to borrow your shoes?โ. Pookie is intrigued and distracted from what made him sad in the first place and tells his mom she is being silly. After several such attempts, Pookieโs mom gives up, โWhy are you upset? Please tell meโ. Pookie hugs his mom and admits, โI forgetโ.
Kidโs will not always be able to express their feelings, especially during a meltdown and with their limited vocabularies. Parents need to be patient and understanding. As a parent, you may also not be able to always fix their problems. Try to be what your kid needs you to be in that moment, a patient ear, an understanding hug and sometimes, a silly clown.
This book has a playful and beautiful message accompanied by adorable illustrations.
